Chi Lin explores the relationship between the physical and the digital in the ‘phygital’ age through craft and computational media. This originates from a deep engagement with the history of classical sculpture and examines the philosophical logic of anthropocentric thought. In the context of digitalisation, he articulates phenomena produced through embodied experience, reflecting on the geopolitical relations among the self, body, society, and politics.
Drawing on the narrative traditions of classical sculpture, he uses 3D computational production and motion capture to foreground embodied thinking in the posthuman condition. Digital live image plays a crucial role in dialogue with his 3D-printed sculptures, extending their narratives to reflect the conditions and contradictions of the digital age. Consequently, presence and absence emerge as central conditions in the ongoing negotiation between materiality and virtuality. Chroma key green recurs throughout his practice. Within his framework, it functions as a symbolic verb, marking the threshold where embodiment and reflexivity intersect.
Over recent years, his practice has explored the tensions between technological advancement and contemporary life. He suggests that as AI moves towards superintelligence, intelligent agents and automation are bringing the digital age's promises closer to reality. Yet, as AI becomes increasingly politicised, weaponised and commercialised, he raises a question through his practice: could these developments place greater pressure on life, creating new inequalities in wealth, knowledge and capabilities, and deepening divisions within the posthuman condition?
